Listen Up… Good Communications Essential to Remodeling Success

Share Your Vision with  Photos, Magazines, Drawings, Sketches

When you undertake a home remodeling project, good communication is essential. In fact, you could say it ranks right up there with the experience and know-how of the remodeling crew.  Regardless of their talent, they can’t satisfy you, the customer, without fully sharing your vision and expectations.

So, how do you communicate effectively concerning your dreams and wishes for that new bathroom or family room addition?  Sure, words are good, but they are usually not enough. Is a picture really worth a thousand words? The answer is yes.

Look through those home improvement magazines. Take photos of rooms you see that you might like to replicate. Save online images that capture your vision. Be prepared to share those with your contractor so the two of you can immediately be on the same page regarding your expectations.  Don’t leave the result to chance or wrong assumptions. Be clear about what you want.

In addition to communicating, be sure you are up to speed on requirements for licenses and permits before the job begins. Discuss these requirements in advance with your contractor.  Are permits needed? If so, what kind and from whom? Will the contractor take care of this? What do they cost? Can they be issued immediately, or is there a backlog or applications?  Again, don’t assume the answers.  Ask the questions early. Be well-informed.

Finally, be realistic about your budget. You should definitely do your homework—researching materials costs, assessing the local labor market, shopping your project among various contractors. But you need to have a degree of flexibility. Remodeling projects often involve unforeseen circumstances. Opening walls sometimes leads to electrical, structural or plumbing surprises. Mold, leaking pipes or rotting wood may be revealed. Plan for contingencies when you do your financial plan.

These are just a few of the major considerations in considering a remodeling project. Let Garrett Construction and Roofing help you — they listen.
