Tennessee is a Leading State for Mold Damage

There is Life After Mold.  Call Garrett Construction for Expertise and Remodeling.

Mold can be found in homes and buildings all over the country, and it can cause a wide range of problems from structural deterioration to serious health effects. Many may be surprised to learn that Tennessee is one of the leading states where mold issues occur.

According to CurrentResults.com, the Southeast is one of the worst regions for mold, as it is home to nine of the top 11 states for annual precipitation. Hawaii tops the list, but the rest are in the Southeast except for Connecticut. Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and South Carolina are all on the list.

As an East Tennessee homeowner, you should take mold very seriously and address it as soon as it is discovered. Exposure to high concentrations of mold can lead to health issues such as headaches, fatigue, and shortness of breath. The fungus can cause problems with your respiratory system, especially if you suffer from conditions like asthma or allergies. Mold allergies can be incredibly challenging, creating a variety of symptoms ranging from irritated eyes to coughing. If you have asthma, mold can trigger attacks that make it difficult to breath.

Mold feeds on organic materials, including wood. Today, many homeowners are familiar with how mold can negatively impact indoor air quality, but mold can also damage a building’s exterior and structural components. A mold inspection can save your home from serious—and expensive—structural damage. Look for unsightly brown and black stains which may be a sign of water damage.

Behind all mold growth is a water or moisture problem. Mold removal and remediation will always involve cleaning up existing mold while avoiding exposure to the cleaning crew and the homeowner. New growth must be prevented by addressing the moisture source.

You know your mold problem is resolved when:

  • The moisture problem has been fixed. Verify this by revisiting the home soon after remediation — you shouldn’t see any signs of recurring water damage.
  • No sign of visible mold, mold-damaged materials or moldy odors.
  • The homeowners can re-occupy the home without physical symptoms or aggravated health complaints.
