Are you concerned about the safety of your roof?
This year’s Farmer’s Almanac predicted a cold and snowy winter for East Tennessee, and through the first month of 2022, the prediction has proved correct. A series of snowstorms has created treacherous traveling conditions and forced school closures. For some homeowners, it has also raised concerns about the safety of your roof.
The most dangerous risk to your home because of snow is a roof collapse. It only takes four feet of fresh snow, or two feet of compressed snow, to create enough weight to significantly put stress on your roof.
One of the biggest threats to your home is when the snow starts to melt. Water can seep into cracks and leak into your home. Small cracks that you might not have noticed can grow over winter, causing the water to flood your space and create unexpected house damage from snow.
In general, roof damage caused by severe winter storms and blizzards is covered by homeowner’s insurance. Types of roof damage covered by your insurance will depend on the policy’s terms and the reasons your roof needs to be repaired or replaced. Typically, a policy covers problems that are sudden or accidental and caused by certain events such as wind, fire, hail or the weight of snow.
It is a good idea to file a claim with your insurer when your roof gets damaged because of snow and ice. Once it is approved, you can receive compensation that can then be used for your roof replacement or repair. Remember, you’ll still have to pay a deductible even if your homeowner’s insurance covers most damage resulting from winter weather.
